Easter weekend, 1978, marked the return of the steam locomotive to the Settle-Carlisle Railway after an absence of ten years when former LNER class V2 Green Arrow departed Leeds with ‘The Norfolkman’ bound for Carlisle. For those who witnessed that momentous occasion, few could have envisaged that by the year 2008 we would have had thirty unprecedented years of steam-hauled charter trains on one of the most iconic and heavily graded main lines in the country.

It was during this period that the author became involved in the running of several steam locomotives such as, Leander, Princess Margaret Rose and Duchess of Sutherland which subsequently led to him working on the footplate over the S&C, and in later years he was to become responsible for the planning of many of the steam-hauled charter trains that appeared on the route.

This book takes a detailed look at steam operations on the Settle-Carlisle Railway since Green Arrow’s ground breaking venture in 1978. In addition to offering an insight as to how steam workings have evolved during those thirty years, the book also contains many behind the scene images that the author was able to capture whilst working closely with steam on the line.

The book is further enhanced by contributions from Dick Hardy and Mike Notley in addition to the inclusion of several previously unpublished colour images of BR’s final steam-hauled train (1T57) which traversed the route on the 11th August 1968.
